Vintage Advertising

I think that I have mentioned in the past that I REALLY love vintage advertising. There is just something about the art of the hand painted letters with their slight inconsistencies and their wonderful customized glyphs that really draw me in, no matter what the sign is this one for instance.

When I saw this vintage sign online I knew that I had to try and paint it. Never having raised chickens myself, I originally thought that this was a sign that advertised chicken know, to actually feed chickens with. It wasn't until after I decided to put the brush and paint to it before I actually looked into the meaning behind the sign...

Poultry by-product meal (PBM) is a high-protein commodity used as a major component in some pet foods. It is made from grinding clean, rendered parts of poultry carcasses and can contain bones, offal and undeveloped eggs, but only contains feathers that are unavoidable in the processing of the poultry parts.!  I definitely pays to look into the vintage advertising before you attempt to paint it and display it somewhere in your home! I guess it could be a good conversation piece :) Since I had already painted up the text of the sign beforehand, I decided to add a little chicken for fun.  Maybe people will focus on the chicken and not the meaning *fingers crossed*.

I don't always use chalk paints to paint vintage advertising, but I happened to have quite a bit of Annie Sloan Aubusson and Old White Chalk Paint on hand so I went with those colours and did the shadowing in some acrylic craft paint that I had around the house. Because I knew that the sign was going to be used for indoor decor, I just waxed it for protection after beating up the pine board a little bit with some sandpaper and anything else that I could get my hands on.  No matter what this says, it's still one of my favourites that I have done :)

  1. The sign is pretty, even if it advertises a yucky item. thanks for the inspiration.
