To the Beach House We Go!

This oar was buried in my garage of "wonders" for months upon end, until I unearthed it in between larger projects. In it's former life, it was a child's growth chart that was a lovely barn red and the markings on it were made with just a sharpie marker.

I was able to clean off all of the markings with some alcohol based hand sanitizer and then gave it a quick wipe down with a wet cloth before tackling it with paint. Because I knew that it would be simply a sign for decor purposes, I used regular acrylic craft paint.

I was able to distress the paint down quite a bit for a"loved" appearance and reach the original paint of the barn red. I painted the oar with the Beach House text on one side with the blue and then with all white and distressed red finish on the other so that it could be reversible. Doing this allowed it to be used as either a sign hanging on the wall or a rustic looking oar propped up in a corner of a room. Either way, it was fun to look at :) It was then sealed with both clear and dark wax for the overall feeling of being well worn with age.

  1. Sitting in my parents' beach trailer right now at the Jersey Shore and thinking this would look great on their porch!
