Chippy is the Word of the Day

The word for today is chippy :) Oh, how I love that word! It gives me goosebumps! Thrifting also gives me goosebumps (and heebeejeebees sometimes too but we won't get into that right now)...ahem... back to thrifting. A thrift store is exactly where I picked up these wooden candle sticks that were already pre-painted with a blue that looked almost like Aubusson in the Annie Sloan Chalk Paint line. They had a little bit of sheen to them and they were a perfect pairing for some Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint.

I chose Eulalie's sky and Ironstone together and mixed a lighter shade of blue and then accidentally added a little too much water, resulting in a thinner paint mixture that ended with me painting 6 coats of paint to get solid coverage over the darker blue. Lesson learned.

I mentioned that the candle sticks had a slight sheen to them but I chose not to use the bonding agent because I wanted a really chippy look. I also didn't sand them prior to painting them. Once I added the paint, I got my handy dandy paint scraper and was ready to tackle the flaky paint. Didn't happen. Not a single flake dared to fall off my pre-envisioned chippy candle sticks *insert pouty face here*.

What's a girl with a little chippy paint ache in her heart to do? Back to experimenting I went and this is where I discovered that a little wash/moisture can go a long way :) I started out by mixing a little MMS Typewriter with some Walnut water based stain and quite a bit of water. I then slathered the candlesticks with the mix and dabbed off the excess with a rag and watched the magic happen. The moisture in the wash coat started the flaking action as well as added the discolouration of an aged look so that it eliminated the need for a dark wax coat.

I chipped away the lifted paint and then sealed it up with a little clear wax. I then waited a few minutes and buffed them up to a soft shine. Just the way I imagined. *Sniff* I love it when good things happen to good people! ;)
